How To Finance Your Small Business (S24E6)

This Week On The Blox

It’s time to talk MONEY! Today, the Bloxers are diving into the dollars, deals, and decisions behind early-stage fundraising. From understanding when to raise capital to knowing what investors are actually looking for, this lesson is all about making sure founders are financially prepared to turn their big ideas into even bigger businesses.

Once the lesson wraps, it’s time to put that knowledge to work in the next challenge, where the Bloxers will have to show they can do more than talk a big game. Then, it’s back to the judges for consultations, where the questions get tougher, the feedback gets sharper, and the founders are forced to take a hard look at whether their business is truly ready for its next stage of growth.

Because having a million-dollar idea is one thing. Building a business someone would actually invest a million dollars in? That's a whole different ballgame.

Venture Capital: Bigger Than Silicon Valley

Think venture capital is reserved for tech startups with billion-dollar dreams? Think again. While venture capitalists often gravitate toward innovative, high-growth companies, the real attraction is a business with serious potential to scale. But having a promising business isn't enough. Founders also need to recognize when their company is positioned to attract investment and how to make the most of that opportunity.

The Funding Sweet Spot: Why Timing Matters

In fundraising, being ready and being attractive to investors aren't always the same thing. Investors want to see evidence that your business has potential, but they also want to get involved while there's still significant room for growth. Approach them before you've established traction, and you may struggle to make your case. Wait too long, and the investment opportunity may no longer align with their strategy. Knowing when to make your move can make all the difference.

Raise Strategically, Keep More of Your Business

Securing a big investment might sound like the ultimate win, but giving up a large percentage of your company too soon can come at a steep price. Tranche funding offers another approach by releasing capital in stages as the business achieves agreed-upon milestones. This allows founders to demonstrate progress, potentially negotiate better terms over time, and avoid unnecessary dilution. The goal isn't simply to raise money. It's to raise the right amount under the right conditions.

The Right Investors Bring More Than Money

An investor's value shouldn't be measured by the size of their check alone. Angel investors and early-stage venture capitalists can bring industry connections, strategic guidance, and credibility that help a growing business gain traction. Their involvement can also send a powerful signal to future investors that your company is worth paying attention to. Sometimes, the relationships that come with the investment are just as valuable as the funding itself.

Fundraising Isn't the Time to Play the Waiting Game

Pitching one investor, waiting for a response, and then moving on to the next can turn fundraising into a painfully long process. A more concentrated approach allows founders to build momentum by engaging multiple qualified investors within the same timeframe. With a compelling pitch deck, solid financials, and a well-researched prospect list, coordinated outreach can create opportunities for competing offers and stronger negotiating leverage. The faster you can navigate the fundraising process effectively, the sooner you can get back to what matters most: growing your business.

Kelby McCan
Kelby McCan
Real Estate Development, Serial Entrepreneur and Actor

Kelby McCan has built his life around helping people feel safe when the stakes are high. At 20 years old, he was selected for Air Force Special Warfare Pararescue, beginning a 10-year career that took him across four continents rescuing military personnel and civilians affected by natural disasters. Years later, Kelby found himself on the other side of a crisis. Just two months after purchasing a home in Port Aransas, Texas with his wife and newborn daughter, Hurricane Harvey devastated their property. During the rebuilding process, they discovered that portions of the home had been sold to them with unpermitted dwellings that couldn’t legally be rebuilt. With a mortgage to pay and rental income suddenly gone, Kelby returned overseas to contract in Africa while his family stayed behind. That experience changed the trajectory of his career. Determined to make sure other families had someone protecting their interests during one of the biggest purchases of their lives, Kelby studied real estate while overseas and became an agent. His mission was simple: provide the honest, relentless representation he wished his own family had received. The approach resonated. In his first year, Kelby represented a $2.2 million home and later secured contracts totaling $15 million in properties over a four-month period. Today, Kelby serves the Port Aransas market with the same mindset that defined his military career: protect the people who trust you, stay calm when things get complicated, and never quit when someone is counting on you. For Kelby, real estate isn’t just about selling property. It’s about making sure his clients never feel like they’re facing the biggest decisions of their lives alone.
